My Experiences With Online Dating, Should We Give It A Shot?

Online Dating

After all my dilemmas with men lately, I decided to go back to online dating. I made up my mind after reading the local newspaper, which advertised a UK based online dating site called Urban Dating. I was on RSVP for quite a while when I joined back in the end of 2007.  Back then I was also on PlentyOfFish and Lavalife.com, and a few others, but I cannot remember which ones. I joined eHarmony but did not like it at all. Now that I think about it, RSVP.com.au has always remained my favorite, and one of the best online dating sites. As for Lavalife… what can I say? I thought it was the lamest online dating site as it seems it was all about sex on there, but then again, what is not about sex nowadays? If you have been reading my latest posts, you already know my thoughts on this matter…

Being the old-fashioned woman that I am, I still think that the man is the one who should be doing the first move and yes, therefore he would be the one paying (sorry feminists!) Yes, it could be argued, but that is the way I like it, though that doesn’t mean I will not spend any money on a man. And RSVP works well with that kind of thinking.

Now on Urban, you both have to pay, otherwise this is going nowhere. OK, so I suppose it set things straight, as both parties have to pay to be able to chat. I suppose, considering what I have seen in London, if the guy is ready to spend money in a membership, you might have better luck to meet somebody who is not broke, or a total tight ass! LOL

With RSVP, I could just look at the profile and the other party would have seen me “stalking them”, then it would be their choice to contact me. They could always use the free way, and click on the button “send a free kiss”. This would let me know they are interested, and then it would be my choice to reply yes or no. From there one of the parties has to buy RSVP stamps to be able to get in touch with the other by email or phone, as now you can register your phone number.

With RSVP, I have never had to spend anything, because my profile was quite popular and I had enough guys contacting me on a daily basis. I don’t mean to brag, but some of them would not even bother to send me a free kiss to see if I would at least be interested, since I do have strict criteria but hey, if they want to waste their stamps for a big chance of me saying no, that is their problem, and that’s their money, not mine!

Urban Dating might be a brand new online dating site, and the reason why I haven’t decided to invest any money in a membership is, first, that I noticed most of the profiles were incomplete, and a picture is not really telling me enough to think anything about a person. Second, I just love reading men’s profiles! It is just so funny what men can come up with sometimes!

That was until Urban Dating finally decided to offer a 3 day trial for £1.98, which was reasonable enough for me to give it a try. Because of the lack of responses I could only conclude that not many guys on there had a paid membership. And, as usual, a lot of them were obviously not reading my profile, as they were either too short or too old…. Also London being such an international city, I had to deal with those guys that barely spoke a word of English, and it was a big ‘no, no’ for me.

In the end, I decided this online dating site was not worth it, and I would not be going ahead of taking a full membership.

Anyway, here are 3 of some of the emails I received from Urban Dating online dating site.

1. Subject: hi

2. Subject: sexy smiler :) xxx

You must get loads of guys hitting on you. Anyway get in touch, think we could be hot together. My no is 077 ———— xxx

3. Subject: hey….
hey there my mystery lady… your looking absolutely gorgeous in your photo, so here is me being brave and breaking the ice to come and chase you…now that surely deserves 2 things. 1. a smile on your face. and 2. a very nice reply.
so whats new and exciting with you right now? Let’s find out… xxx

What do you think? Would any of those tempt you? Was it enough for me to answer any one of those? I mean, I’m not turned on by misspelling, and they all sound kind of desperate to me… am I being too pretentious for an online dating site?

Another site which I have always been found on is hotornot.com, probably because at first it was not really a dating site. I have always kept my account and I would usually update my profile with my current location, since I tend to travel around the world a fair bit. I have met quite a few interesting people from there, and this is one of the sites that, over the years, have improved for the best. It is mainly free but, like RSVP, they offer a paid membership with loads of advantages. Besides, as long as one of the parties has a paid membership you can contact each other. Plus, it is quite cheap compared to other sites so it is definitely worth a try for online dating.

How about you? Have you ever paid for a membership in an online dating site? Would you make a first move, or would you just try and see if anyone’s interested in your profile? Do you think only men should pay for online dating membership, or should we girls be supposed to pay as well?
